5 People In Serious Condition After Crash On US 422, Police Say (Update)

Five people are in the hospital and US 422/Benjamin Franklin Highway/West Chocolate Avenue was partially closed in Hershey due to a multi-vehicle crash, authorities announced on Monday morning.

The crash closed the highway's westbound lanes on the roadway between University Drive and Sipe Avenue around 9 a.m. on Aug. 21, according to PennDOT.

A large SUV left the northbound lane and went down an embankment and slamming head-on into a large tree, Derry Township police explained in an updated release on Monday afternoon.

Skyler Spangler, 20, of Red Lion, was driving, two other adults and two children were passengers in his vehicle, according to the police release. 

All five people were transported to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center by Life Lion EMS for further treatment.

The crash scene is near the H.B. Reese's Candy Company on Reese Avenue, according to Google Maps.

US 422 is expected to "be closed for an extended period of time for a traffic crash investigation," the police said in a release around 10:30 a.m. it reportedly around 3 p.m. 

An alternate travel route used was Route 322 (West Governor Road).

No further details are available at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
